Energy self-sufficiency of the entire production plant
Among the Group’s strategic goals is achieving energy self-sufficiency at the San Martino in Rio (RE) production plant, a crucial step also in terms of environmental sustainability.
To this end, in 2022 Italgraniti Group completed the installation of a high-efficiency cogeneration plant with a nominal capacity of 4.5 MW, allowing for an 89% reduction in electricity draw from the grid. Using natural gas as the sole energy source, the plant enables the combined production of electricity and thermal energy, significantly increasing the efficiency of the fuel used and reducing both energy costs and CO2 emissions compared to separate production. The plant supplies electricity 24/7, ensuring the energy self-sufficiency of the entire facility, with any excess being fed back into the grid.
The Group's plant purifies and reuses 100% of waste water. In addition to saving water resources, Italgraniti has eliminated the risk of pollution of surface and underground waters.
Italgraniti Group recovers 100% of discarded, raw and cooked materials within the production process. By maximizing the recovery of waste, the need for new raw materials is reduced and natural resources such as clays and feldspars are saved.
The investments have almost eliminated undifferentiated industrial waste, to date it is only 1% of the total. The containment of waste has contributed to a virtuous production cycle capable of recycling most of the waste that is created during the production phase.
Regenerative afterburner
The innovative system that protects the well-being of the territory
The new post-combustor has strengthened the existing fabric filter fume purification system, avoiding the possibility of unpleasant odors being dispersed. The modern system is able to intercept the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in the organic-based glues used in digital decoration.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) could potentially cause olfactory discomfort for those living and working near the production plant. Although no such complaints have ever been reported, ITALGRANITI GROUP has decided to install an afterburner as a preventive measure. Inside, temperatures reach 850 °C, which is sufficient to completely oxidize VOCs and aldehydes. Equipped with three combustion chambers with high thermal efficiency, the afterburner collects the untreated fumes in the first chamber and the purified ones in the second, while the third chamber is dedicated to eliminating any residues from the post-combustion process itself.
